Some FAQs..

  • How do I study effectively and make sure I keep my grades up? Many new UConn students find that studying for a college course is much different than studying for a high school class. A few ways to stay on top of your studies and keep your grades up include: 1.) Start studying at least a week before your exam, 2.) Keep a planner with all your homework assignments, exams, papers, and any other due dates in order to keep track of everything, 3.) Manage your time wisely; set aside time for homework and studying, and time for social things, 4.) Take advantage of the resources of campus if you are struggling; some of these include the Q Center, the Writing Center, tutoring programs, and the Academic Achievement Center
  • How do I make friends? Getting involved is one of the best ways to meet new people on campus. The Involvement Fair (September 7, 2011) is the perfect place to sign-up for some new things and branch out to new experiences. Also, a few tiny things that you can do within your residence hall to help.. 1.) Leave your door open! It makes you appear open and ready to meet new friends! 2.) Introduce yourself to the people on your floor, or even your building, 3.) Take advantage of the programs your RAs put on; everyone may be feeling the same way you are, even if they have a smile on their face
  • Do people usually graduate in four years? Depending on the program you are in, yes. Certain programs, such as NEAG and Pharmacy, take more than 4 years, but your typical Bachelor of Arts/Science takes four years. Many majors only take two years to complete, but the General Education requirements are what take up the rest of your time. In order to graduate on time, make sure you have an equal balance of major courses and gen eds each semester.
  • How do I drop a class? You can drop a class within the StudentAdmin (PeopleSoft) system. You can drop a class without any consequence during the first 10 days of each semester. After the Add/Drop period, you can still drop a class 'til about halfway through the semester with a "W" on your transcript, which means "Withdrawn." Remember: a "W" is always better than a F!
  • What do I do if I don't get into the program of my choice? It's always good to have a back-up plan just in case. For example, if you do not get into the NEAG School of Education, there is another option in which you can receive your Masters in Teaching after your undergraduate career. It's important to have all the information you need for your program (including test dates, application requirements and dates), and have a back-up plan if something doesn't work out exactly as you had planned.
  • Where do I get tickets for sporting events? Ticketing is different for every sport. At this point, season tickets for football are sold out, but people sell their tickets all the time on a Facebook page called "Buy or Sell UConn Tickets"..I would definitely become a member of this page if you're interested in tickets. Basketball tickets for Men and Women are done on a lottery basis--in October you will be asked if you'd like to enter the lottery and if you are chosen, they will then ask if you would like to buy tickets. People also sell these tickets on the Facebook page. Other sporting events are usually free or very cheap ($2 for the soccer games) and you can buy tickets at the gate.
  • Where can I use points from my Meal Plan? You can use your points at the Union Street Market or any of the cafes on campus.
  • Where can I find a job? Check out www.studentjobs.uconn.edu for job listings on campus. Also, walk into any office you are interested in working at and ask!
  • Can overnight visitors stay for an extended period of time? Overnight guests are only allowed to stay for 3 consecutive nights at a time. Also, keep in mind your roommate before inviting people to stay over.
  • How do I get involved with Intramurals? Visit the Rec Center and grab a calendar! These list the dates for all intramurals on campus, including how to sign-up for the free agent list.
